Leadership and Knitting

Blog

Today’s blog is from the BMG Archives, Feb 20, 2019

“Knitters use knitting to value-add to the world.”

            ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

“To add value to others, one must first value others.”

            ~ John Maxwell

“When people talk, listen completely.”

            ~ Ernest Hemingway

“I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else.”

            ~ Pablo Picasso

You may feel this musing is not related to you.  Knitting is a constant passion and deliberate action.  I encourage you to stay with me as I meander a historical, creative craft.

To be a successful knitter you must practice patience.  Knitting can be adapted for different sizes and situations.  Flexibility is important as is the ability to learn to read your pattern and do as you are told, learn to read your work, understand your mistakes, fix your own mistakes, start with quality wool/product, choose wisely so your wool is capable of adapting to your creation, have the right tools – needles, markers, scissors, tapestry needles, pencil and paper, stitch holder – to name a few. Knitting exists in a mentoring community that enables learning through watching and listening.  A creative piece always seems impossible until it is done.  Creativity can sooth the soul and improve your mood.  Knitters practice a sense of shared ownership and excitement when individual success is achieved.

How does knitting relate to leadership?  You might well ask!

A good leader practices patience.   A good leader makes leadership a constant passion with deliberate action, practices flexibility, watches and listens, reads the people around them, makes it their business to understand their own mistakes, fixes their own mistakes, chooses people wisely and ensures teaching the right tools and skills.  All of which are deliberate actions to complete a picture of success.  A creative leader and a piece of leadership work always seems impossible until it is done. Good leadership can sooth the soul and improve the environment of any organization.  Good Leaders practice a sense of shared ownership and excitement when success is achieved.

BMG can be part of your creativity and support your leadership for successful outcomes whatever the project might be.
