“There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.”
~ Willa Cather
“If you spend your whole life waiting for the storm, you’ll never enjoy the sunshine.”
~ Morris West
“That’s the way things come clear. All of a sudden. And then you realize how obvious they’ve been all along.”
~ Madeleine L’Engle
“And suddenly you know … its time to start something new and the magic of new beginnings”
~ Unknown
In this part of the world the sudden onset of thunder, lightening, rain and hail has been a daily happening in the past week. I’m not a big fan of such happenings. As a child I learned to be frightened of storms. As a leader I began to see the symbolism. And rather than be frightened I began to understand the teachings of the storms. When a storm brews in an organization a leader can listen, react with mindful consideration and let the storm leave behind the path ahead. A ‘storm’ can be a signal of change! A signal a conscious leader should not miss!
Just as we see a weather storm brew and spew, we can see the same in our organizations. Its what we do about it that counts. It is not the kind of storm you can ignore. It won’t go away on its own. It needs careful honesty. And it needs a leader that can put aside their own fear and doubt. It is resilience leadership that rebuilds hope. It is a resilient leader who weathers the storm and uses it to start something new.
