Giving back is where you give, and then nothing happens. No benefits for you, no recognition, nothing tangible gets sent your way. Your biggest and sole reward is the realization that you’ve made a significant change in someone’s life. And if not “significant” then a positive change nevertheless.

I choose the path, in my work, in the not for profit sector. I started out, young and idealistic. After all, at university, I’m sure I was convinced I could save the world. I had parents who were both veterans. Is that not the ultimate civic duty. Did I not understand civic duty? I must admit that it didn’t take long for reality to set in. Not all was just about civic duty. And for me it didn’t take long for my strong work ethic to push me up the so called ‘corporate ladder.’ I found myself faced with tough decisions and constantly wondering how I could keep my good heart and make the tough decisions! Could I do both?
Giving back is the most important and valuable thing you can do. It took many years for me to pull it ALL together with enormous kindness alone the way. The kindness, mentorship, willingness to share from good hearted people who shared the struggles of the day to day operations in the NFP sector. I now look back and truly see the exceptional value of that learning. And I can proudly say I did do both. I made the tough decisions and I kept my good heart. I suggest to you that it is not what you do it is how you do it!
