“There are realities we all share, regardless of our nationality, language, or individual tastes. As we need food, so do we need emotional nourishment: love, kindness, appreciation, and support from others.”
~ Goswami Krivananda
“Happiness rarely keeps company with an empty stomach.”
~ Japanese Proverb
“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.”
~ Nelson Mandela
I grew up on a farm. A rich nourishing environment of food, love, family, and stability despite the hardships my parents shielded me from. I was cold sometimes when the wind blew through the old farmhouse, but I was never hungry. It’s been a long road from that small farm. I’m forever grateful for that beginning, with parents who did their best despite a meager farm life. A very different time and place.
Poverty, unemployment, and low wages lead to food insecurity, and we’ve had a perfect storm happening. It is a complicated issue! In my simplest form, I see a grocery sector continuing to make huge profits despite the hunger we witness and or experience every day. As their profits soar, more and more people are struggling to find nourishment, single men and women, families, children, seniors, and communities. It’s easy to forget that not everyone can afford what appears on a grocery store shelf. It’s easy to forget that everything bought is priced to make money and not about feeding people! Is nourishment at risk of disappearing? At the very least, I say once again, and encourage all of us to notice, and care!
