“Her crown of white hair seemed to stand like a halo around her in the night sky.”

“My grandmother was an unparalleled storyteller who gave me a preview of how life might turn out, and also fortified my empathy.”
~ Chris Ware
“Grandma always made you feel she had been waiting to see just you all day and now the day was complete.”
~ Marcy DeMaree
I recently read a short story, “Grandma’s Apron.” The story launched a bucketful of memories. I am grateful that I had the influence of my maternal Grandmother! I acknowledge that not ALL of us had such fate as a grandmother, but rather the chance to embrace the influence of another elder in our life.
My Grandmother Lavender was a farm wife! She often stood at the wood stove with a poker in one hand and a book in the other, ready to stoke the fire and hide the book if Grandpa came from the barn! I admired her for that act of defiance! She was my security and my safeguard, and she buffered the world. The recent memories have reminded me of my days with her and the strength of her that I have welcomed. I think we have genetic memory that we often forget to access!
I encourage you to take the time to embrace the memories of your ‘grandmother’ or the generations of women who have touched your life, the past and the present!
